I haven’t seen my husband for three years. We both went away to the other side many years ago and I traveled around with him. But then I cam back and he went away again. He keeps in contact with the children and sends us things. My mother helps me some too. But really, as far as raising seven children on my own, it’s ok, I’m used to it.

No he visto a mi esposo por tres años. Nosotros dos salimos por el otro lado hace mucho tiempo y yo viajaba con el. Pero entonces yo regrese y el se fue otra vez. El esta en contacto con los niños siempre y nos manda cosas. Mi madre me ayuda un poco tambien. Pero, sobre todo, en el asunto de cuidar a siete hijos sola - ni modo, estoy acostumbrada.

My husband’s dream is to have a car so he can drive to a better job. There are some hen houses or pig farms where he could work if he had a way to get there. There’s no work around here any more.

He’s been gone three times. The last time was for a year. Sure, it’s hard. My mother helps, but I have to be both mother and father to my children. At night I feel very lonely. My dream is to have a better house.

El sueño de mi esposo es para tener un carro que pueda manejar a un trabajo mejor. Hay algunos gallineras y granjas de puercos donde podria encontrar empleo si tuviera una manera para llegar alli. Ya no hay trabajo aqui.

El ha ido tres veces. La ultima vez fue para un año. Si, es dificil para mi. Mi madre me ayuda, pero de todos modos tengo que ser mama y papa a mis hijos. En la noche me siento muy sola. Mi sueño es para tener una casa mejor.

Ever since my son was little he would tell me that one day he would go to live in the United States. He heard lots of stories about it from several people and wanted to find out for himself what it was all about. I kept saying. “Oh, no you won’t go.” But then one day, when he was 19, he said.”Mama, I’m grown now and I want to go away.”

The only reason he wanted to go was to get ahead. The money he could earn here just didn’t suffice. When he left, he asked me to pray for him. He was afraid of something happening in the road. So I prayed and thanks to God he arrived safely in the U.S. I don’t know where he is, but he calls often to keep in touch and I know he’s working in a good job with a boss who treats him well.

Desde cuando mi hijo fue chiquita, estaba diciendo qu un dia iria para vivir en los EEUU. El escucho muchas historias de la gente sobre el pais y quisiera entender si misma si todo fue la verdad. Yo decia,”No! No vas a salir!” Pero un dia, cuando tenia 19 años, el dijo,” Mama, estoy grande ahora y ya me voy.”

Solo queria irse para salir adelante. El dineo de aqui no le alcanza. Cuando el salio, me rogaba a orar para su seguridad en el camino. Pues, ore y gracia a Dios, el llegue bien en los EEUU. Yo no se donde esta, pero el llama por telefono con frequencia y yo se que el esta trabajando en un trabajo bueno y con un jefe que le trata bien.

No, we’ve never been to the United States, Several years ago it was easier to cross the border. You could go and visit family there. But now, it’s too dangerous. I’m going to start trying to get papers, but it may take awhile. I’m retired, so the government says I can’t get a visa, but I only want to go there to look around, get to know it and to visit my son and his family. Not to work or anything. We’ve never seen our grandchildren. The youngest just turned two.

The people from here go to the U.S. to work – in difficult jobs – they don’t know anything about the country. They only go to provide a living for their families, to put on a roof or a floor in their house. This is why the people from here, from Mexico, go away. For sheer necessity.

No, nunca hemos ido a los Estados Unidos. Muy antes, podian cruzar la frontera mas facilmente. Podia irse y visitar a familiars. Pero ahora esta demasiado peligroso. Voy a empazar sacar papels para irse, pero me toma mucho tiempo por que estoy pensionado. El gobierno dice que no puede darme una visa, pero solo quiero ir para pasearlo, conocerlo y visitar a mi hijo y su familia. No para trabajar. Nunca hemos visto a nuestros nietos. La mas menor ya cumplio dos años.

La gente de aqui va para trabajar en trabajos duros. No saben nada del pais. Solo van para sacar para vivir su familia, hacer un techo o piso para la casa. A eso vale la gente. Por eso se va a la gente de aqui, de Mexico. Por puro nesecidad.

My husband left in 2002. I didn’t want him to go but he said he had to. It was a very difficult decision. He withstood 3 days in the desert. Now he works as a gardener on the other side. Some people are jealous of us, but that’s not how it is – it’s only for the money. Once he came back because my mother died. But he left again and now I haven’t seen him for a year and a half. We talk on the phone sometimes.

There’s no work here now. Before, a long time ago, there were fields to cultivate. But now, with the draught and modern life, all the work has gone. Maybe a guest worker program would be a good thing, but it would still tear our family apart.

A while ago our neighbors, the whole family, left. They went through the desert and had a terrible time. The father saw a dead body with the head rotting. He was glad his children didn’t see that. Luckily, they all made it to the other side ok.

Mi esposo salio en 2002. Yo no quisiera que el vaya, pero el dijo que tuviera que ir. Fue un decision muy dificil. El duro 3 dias en el desierto. Ya, el trabaja como jardiñera en el otro lado. Gente tienen cellos pero no es asi – solo es para el dinero. Una vez el regreso por que mi madre se murio. Pero el salio otra vez y ya no le he visto por un año y medio. A veces platicamos por telefono.

No hay trabajo aqui ahora. Antes, hace mucho, fue toreños para sembrar. Pero con la sequia y la vida moderna todo el trabajo se ha ido. Tal vez un programa de huespuedes seria bien, pero todavia nos separia nuestra familia.

Hace un rato, algunos vecinos nuestros se fueron todo la familia. Ellos pasaron por el desierto y paso una vez terrible. El padre vio a un cadaver con la cabeza descompuesto. Fue bien que los niños no lo vieron. Con suerte, todo la familia llego bien al otro lado.

(Feb. 2007) I think my husband is in jail because I haven’t heard anything from him. He’s come and gone to the US a few times. Been in Kansas. He’s been gone two years now.

(Nov. 2007) The first time that my husband tried to cross the border he came back very unhappy because he couldn’t cross. He had a very hard time – his feet full of blisters. He spent two weeks not being able to walk very well. He had left so we could get money for things like (the kids’) school, clothes and because we wanted to do some home repairs. When he was in the desert he survived ….with….what is the name of that plant?.....something like prickly pear…..I didn’t know what the desert would be like……the thirst that he had…his mouth all white…white. It grieved me very much. Very sad. I cried with him.
Then, he tried again. He left and this time was when he was caught. They tied him up by the hands and feet and threw him on an airplane…..

(NOTE) Although Maria’s husband has returned home, they’re separated now.

(Feb 2007) Yo creo que mi esposo está en el carcel, porque no he oido nada. El iba y venia a los EEUU algunos veces. Estuvó en Kansas. Ha estado ido dos años ahora.

(Nov. 2007) La primera vez que mi esposo intentó a cruzar regresó muy triste porque no pudió cruzarse. Fue maltratado por cruzar además – los pies llenos de ampollas. Duró asi dos semanas que no pudó caminar bien. El salió para conseguir dinero para todo – la escuela, ropa, y queremos arreglar la casa. Cuando estaba en el desierto dice que duró que….con…..como se llama esta rama?....como nopal….no se que sería del desierto…..por la seca que tenía la boca….blancos…..blancos. Me dió mucho lástima. Muy triste, lloré junto con el.
Pues, volvió hacer la lucha, se fue y este fue cuando l’agararron echaron una vez. L’agararron por las manos, los pies…echaron en un avión…..

(NOTA) Aunque ya ha regresado el marido de Maria, estan separados.

Three Children

My husband left three years ago. He hasn’t returned. I keep waiting. At first, he got papers to leave the country from his employer in Tabasco. He left and……oh, I can’t remember names!…..wandered around various places in the United States…..it was in the north, planting pine trees. But the company he worked for paid very little. He had a quota of trees he had to finish each day, and he also had to load and transport them. The workmen were badly treated. Very difficult work. He was contracted with this company for three months. After that, he could go wherever he liked. Although he crossed the border legally, his visa expired after one year.

As far as raising the kids on my own? Well, actually, because it’s been this way ever since the kids were little, I’m used to it. Because really, it’s been since…..it’s a long time since we’ve lived together. The children understand this. My mother helps when I work. I sell groceries at the store. I used to clean houses in the city and I’ve taught dance to kids at our church.

The reason my husband left was so that we could have a better house. Here, houses collapse in a storm and rain leaks through the roof. Now, I have a better house, but it still lacks a floor. It’s an illusion, this idea of leaving for the other side, to improve your life here – a dream that doesn’t necessarily come true. Still, you can earn $400 a week in the U.S., compared to about 600 pesos ($60) a week here.

Trés Niños

Mi esposo salio hace trés años. No ha regresado. Sigo esperando. Al principio el sacó papeles para salir del país de su empleo en Tabasco. Salió y……¡ay! No se puedo los nombres…..andaba por varios partes en los EEUU…. fue en el norte, sembrando pinos. Pero la companía pagaba muy poco y el tuvo que terminar una cantidad cierta de pinos cada día. También, los cargaban y traian. Las manos furon muy maltratado Muy pesado trabajo.Estaba contractado con esta companía por trés meses, pero despues de esto temporado pudo ir donde quisiera. Aunque cruzo la frontera legalmente, su permiso se acabo despues de un año.

¿Para cuidar a los niños sola? Pues, de hecho, por eso fue desde que estababan chiquitos…, ya estoy acostumbrada, porque mas bien tambien desde fue… tenemos tiempo que no vivimos juntos. Este entienden los niños. Mi madre me ayuda cuando trabajo. Vendo abarrotes en la tienda. Antes, limpiaba casas en la ciudad y enseñaba el bailes folklorico a niños en la iglesia.

El razon que mi esposo salió fue para tener una casa mejor. Aqui, las casas tumban durante cyclones y la lluvia sale por la techa. Ya tengo una casa mejor, pero todavia falta un piso. Es una ilusión la idea de salir por el otro lado para mejorar la vida aqui – un sueño que no necesariamente resulta. Pero, todavia, se puede ganar $400 al semana en los EEUU comparada con 600 pesos ($60) aqui.

For Mommy

My son left in 2001. I haven’t seen him since then. Now he is 24 (2006). He wanted to leave. Sometimes he sends me money. He lives in California where he studies English and works in a laundromat. He has hopes that they’ll give him his papers to become an American citizen. He crossed illegally, but had some luck because, just by chance, he crossed the border at an Indian reservation where they treated him very well. Although he did have some trouble with a “pollero” who abducted them and demanded money from their relatives. But they didn’t give it to him because they had crossed the border on bicycles by themselves.

Mi hijo salio en 2001. No le he visto desde entonces. Tiene 24 años ahora (2006). El quisiera salir. Manda dinero a mí de vez en cuando. Vive en California donde estudia inglés y trabaja en una lavandería, Tiene la esperanza de que le den sus papeles para ser ciudadano Americano. El pasó ilegal, pero tuvó suerte porque, por casualidad, cruzaron la frontera por una reservación India y ahi los trataron muy bien. Aunque tuvó un poco de dificultad al cruzar porque un pollero los secuestró y pidió dinero á sus familiares. Pero no se lo dieron porque ellos han cruzados la frontera en bicicleta solos.

Our dad isn’t here with us because he had to go to the United States to work, to give us a better lifestyle and a better future in regards to our studies and other things.

Sure, we miss him, but we know that our dad loves us and wants the best for us, his family.

Photographer’s Note: Alejandra is now going to college where she studies Industrial Engineering. Patricia is 10 years old. They have four other siblings. The children and their mom take turns selling ice cream from their cart in their urban community – one of the worst in the area for crime and drugs. The social worker did not allow me to roam the streets with camera in hand.

Nuestra papa no se encuentra con nosotros debido a que tuvo que ir a Estados Unidos para trabajar, y ofrecernos una mejor manera de vivir y sacarnos a adelante respecto a los studios y otros aspectos.

Claro lo extrañamos, pero sabemos que es nuestro Papa nos quiere, y decea lo mejor para nosotros, su familia.

Los niños y su madre toman turnos vendiendo nieve de su carrito en su comunidad urbano – uno de los peores del area para el crimen y las drogas. (A letter to the people of the United States)

We agree that it is reasonable for you to want to protect your borders from immigrants. I compare it to this example:

We know we wouldn’t like it if a stranger entered our house, because we wouldn’t know his intentions. But at the same time, they (the people in the U.S.) need to understand the sentiments that we have when our family goes away in search of a better future.

Also, we feel impotent - because in difficult moments such as an illness, or, while celebrating an important family event, we can’t be reunited to share either our happiness or our pain.

(Una carta a la gente de los estados unidos)

Nosotros comprendemos que es rasonable que quieron proteger sus fronteros de los emigrantes. La camparo con este ejemplo:

A nosotros no nos gusta que entre un extrano a nuestra casa por no saber que intenciones tiene. Pero, igualmente, ellos (la gente de los estados unidos) deben de entender el sentimiento que nos deja que nuestra familia se vaya a buscar mejor futuro.

Tambien, sentimos impotencia - porque en momentos dificiles de enfermidad, de festejar algun evento importante de la familia, no podemos estar reunidos para convivir y compartir la alegria y el dolor.

Lord, I thank you for the children that you have given me and I pray that you bless them wherever they may be and I pray especially for all the Mexicans that find themselves on the other side (of the border) without papers and that you, Lord, please cover them with your mantel and protect them from all harm because they are searching for a way to feed their families because they, and all of us who remain here suffer for them and we ask of you, Lord, to not abandon them. We have confidence in your great mercy, in the Virgin and inYou to bless them. Thank you, Lord, for everything.

Señor, te doy gracias por los hijos que me distes y te pido que los bendigas donde quiera que se encuentren y te pido muy especial por todos los mexicanos que se encuentren en el otro lado sin papels para que tu Señor los cubras con tu manto y los protejas de todo peligro porque ellos andan buscando el sustento para su familia porque ellos y todos los que nos quedamos aqui tambien sufrimos por ellos y te pedimos a ti Señor que no los abandes confiamos en tu gran misericordia y a esta Señora y este Señor que la acompaña bendicelos. Gracias Señor por todo.
